Diameter 60 m. Screen area 5,300 m². Build time 180 days. On July 28, 2026, the Kongtong Island venue in Yantai switched on the largest immersive LED dome screen in Asia — a kinetic, openable, morphing inner dome with no prior precedent worldwide. Here is how it was built.

What the Audience Sees

Guests take their seats beneath a shell of mythology — immortal islands and clouds across 5,300 m² of curved LED. Performers on wire-work fly through the frame as ceiling screens open like petals. The floor moves: 10 lifting screens rise, tilt and couple with mechanical staircases. A 6 m sphere opens inside the dome for dome-in-dome sequences. Picture, machinery and live performance follow one timeline — 720° naked-eye immersion.

Phase 1 — Structure and Geometry

The dome hangs from an engineered steel shell. Panels were mapped as trapezoidal and fan-shaped groups along the sphere's latitude/longitude grid, defined in a 3D deepened model. On site: ground-level modular pre-assembly, segmented lifting, total-station positioning and ring-by-ring verification. Custom ultra-thin boards keep panel weight at 8.5 kg/m² while tolerances stack down to 12 mm seams around 6 mechanical doors.

Phase 2 — Machinery in the Ceiling

Eight lifting/opening LED screen groups were fitted around 8 single-point + 4 3D rigging points, 4 scenic-device ports and 4 fire-cannon ports — every motion envelope calculated against panel layout before fabrication. Ten lifting floor screens complete the kinetic floor, two interacting with mechanical staircases.

Phase 3 — Sound Through the Screen

Surround audio lives behind the dome: acoustically transparent panels with 50% perforation, <5% sound loss, <0.02 s audio-visual sync error. The screen stops being a wall — the dome becomes the acoustic shell of the theater.

Phase 4 — Imaging Calibration

7680 Hz refresh, 16-bit gray, 1,200 nit at 150 W/m² max white, 10000:1 contrast, NTSC >90% gamut, 8K-class resolution, ≤5% brightness deviation and ≤2ΔE color deviation across the whole surface — calibrated ring by ring before handover.

Phase 5 — Proving It for an Island

Humidity and salt fog drove dedicated protection: anti-humidity/dust/salt-fog design validated by 72-hour salt-spray, dual-85, V-0 flame-retardance, A1 non-combustibility and vibration tests. Operating range -20°C to 80°C; front/rear maintenance by a single technician; parallel circuits so one failed lamp never darkens an area.

The Factory Behind the Dome

Luminatii is a national high-tech enterprise with 70+ patents, 6+ software copyrights and 50+ R&D engineers, products certified to CE, FCC and UL 62368-1 (CNAS/A2LA reports), ISO 9001 / ISO 14001 systems, and displays delivered to 87 countries. This dome is our 20th-plus — spanning 5 m to 60 m inner domes and 2 m to 26 m spheres.
