An LED dome cinema is not a big screen — it is a complete system: display, steel structure, playback, acoustics, machinery and content, engineered together. Buyers who ask only "how much per square meter" usually discover later that the questions that mattered were different ones. Here is the checklist we walk through with every client, drawn from 20+ delivered dome projects.
Step 1 — Define the Positioning
Science centers need fine detail and fulldome science content. Tourism venues need visual impact and throughput. Flying theaters need transparent acoustics and motion sync. Commercial spaces need design integration. Big live shows may combine the dome with floor screens, wire-work and stage machinery. The positioning decides everything downstream — including the price you should expect.
Step 2 — Choose the Dome Diameter (Not "Bigger Is Better")
Diameter multiplies steel tonnage, panel area, installation precision, heat, power and maintenance difficulty. Match it to:
- Venue space — height, clear span, seating layout, evacuation and service space
- Viewing distance — closer seats demand finer pitch and better uniformity
- Capacity — guests per show and turnover efficiency
- Content type — starfields and nature films vs. large-scale show content
Our delivered domes span 5 m to 60 m in diameter — 5–8 m for compact experience pods, 14–28 m for cinemas and themed attractions, 60 m for landmark venues.
Step 3 — LED Dome vs Projection Dome
Projection was the default for decades; LED dome screens now win on brightness, contrast, no-projection-blinds, low maintenance and daytime operability. For commercial venues running shows all day, LED's 10-year cost of ownership is usually lower — we compared both paths in detail in LED Dome Screen vs Projection Dome.
Step 4 — If It's a Flying Theater, Demand Acoustic Transparency
When speakers can't sit behind the screen, "the sound comes from over there while the image is here" destroys immersion. A mature acoustically transparent LED dome solves it: 50% perforation, <5% sound loss, <0.02 s audio-visual sync error — the values delivered on our 60 m Kongtong dome, validated earlier at Chengdu Happy Valley 22 m, Shenzhen 7 m and Huangshi 22/28 m.
Step 5 — Judge the Structure, Not Just the Panel
For domes above 15 m, the steel-LED integration decides the project: panel weight (ours: 8.5 kg/m²), curved splicing accuracy, installation tolerance, service access, heat, fire and MEP interfaces. A supplier who can only make panels will hand you a construction problem.
Step 6 — Read the Spec Sheet Like an Engineer
- Refresh rate — 7680 Hz class for motion and camera work
- Gray scale — 16-bit for dark scenes (space, night, deep sea)
- Brightness — matched to ambient light; more is not always better
- Uniformity & color — ≤5% brightness deviation, ≤2ΔE color across the surface
- Contrast — 10,000:1 class for starfields and night content
The Kongtong 60 m dome runs exactly this class of specification — but the right config for your dome depends on diameter, viewing distance and content, not on copying a flagship.
Step 7 — Ask the Maintenance Questions Early
Can panels be serviced from front and rear? Can one person replace a module? How are power boxes serviced and cooled? Does one failed LED kill the neighborhood? (On our domes: parallel design — a single dead lamp never blackens an area; aluminum power boxes keep service quick.)
Step 8 — Vet the Manufacturer
- Real delivered projects at similar scale — ask for site photos and contacts, not renders
- Custom capability — can they design to your building, not sell you a catalog?
- Turnkey scope — steel + screen + control + commissioning as one contract
- Certifications — CE, FCC, UL 62368-1, ISO 9001/14001 for public venues
- R&D depth — patents in curved splicing, control and protection (Luminatii: 70+ patents, 50+ R&D staff)
Working through this list takes a week and saves months. If you want a shortcut, send us your venue drawings and positioning — we will return a diameter recommendation, spec proposal and itemized budget range within one business day.
